Expecting to fly

09 Feb

we expect to fly

without stretching

without reaching

without trying

without striving

without pursuing

without attempting

without persevering

without endeavouring

without believing.

we expect to fly

without taking

a risk.

Beautiful! The artwork and the sentiment. Yes we do. I was just discussing with a group last night, about that last and final leap over the threshold of change. That most-vulnerable part of the plan. The one that requires action. That is the step, leap, that is scary as shit.

It is. A few years ago I was zip-lining across the highest part of a ravine in Corsica. I knew I was safe, I had double safety on the harness. But the tree tops were way, way below, and the other side seemed a mile away. I sat on a rock on the edge and knew real breath-stealing fear. I launched myself and there was that momentary gutwrenching brief downwards descent as the wire took my weight. And then it was utterly stunning. Indescribable pleasure and adrenaline rush.
But taking that last step …

Wonderful, just wonderful. Zip-lining somewhere beautiful is on my bucket list. It will be a leap for me for sure, but one I want to take. Never-mind all the interpersonal and professional leaps I see in my near future. I imagine the fear is similar…whether physical, emotional, logistical. I have this romantic idea that facing physical fear may somehow help me to overcome the emotional fears. I don’t know if that will hold true, but I would love to experiment with it and see.

I don’t really know whether facing physical fear does that or not. It probably depends on the individual. Smiles. But it is worth doing anyway. The buzz lasts for some time.

This is SO topical for me right now. I’m taking that leap right now and am hoping my wings are attached tightly. 🙂 Thank you so much for reminding me WHY I’m taking that step.

Zip lining back, there’s the rub.

Smiles. Indeed. It was an extreme adventure vacation. We zip-lined backwards and forwards on different lines on the way down. But after that first one, they were shorter, lower, and exciting – without fear.
