Start wearing purple

26 Jan

Another one of my occasional posts about songs I like which you might not have heard.

Gogol Bordello are a gypsy punk band (I can think of no better description) from the USA – at least, they are based in New York but they originate from all over the world – mainly Eastern Europe. They have been going forever (since 1999).

They are anarchic, irreverent, anti-establishment, and well, very different. You might not enjoy them as much as I do. But they make me laugh, dance, feel revolutionary (always good for an old socialist like me) and sing along very loudly.

I could have chosen many songs but this is perhaps their most accessible. It was used in the film ‘Everything is Illuminated’. (I happily admit to have not having seen it but it apparently stars Elijah Wood and the group’s lead vcalist Eugene Hutz and is a comedy-drama about Nazi purges in the Ukraine  – source Wiki)

Anyway. If you do listen beyond the first few bars of this song (which is absolutely nothing to do with politics), then play at a high volume and after a few listens you might be singing it too. Or not.

Start Wearing Purple

Start wearing purple wearing purple
Start wearing purple, for me now
All your sanity and wits, they will all vanish
I promise, it’s just a matter of time
.
So yeah start wearing purple wearing purple
Start wearing purple, for me now
All your sanity and wits, they will all vanish
I promise, it’s just a matter of time.
.
I know you since you were a twenty and I was twenty
But thought that some years from now
A purple little little lady will be perfect
For dirty old and useless clown.
.
So yeah, start wearing purple wearing purple!
Start wearing purple for me now!
All your sanity and wits, they will all vanish,
I promise, it’s just a matter of time!
.
I know it all from Diogenis to Foucault
From Lozgechkin to Paspartu
I ja kljanus obostzav dva paltza
Schto muzika poshla ot Zvukov Mu!
.
Start wearing purple wearing purple!
Start wearing purple for me now!
All your sanity and wits, they will all vanish,
I promise, it’s just a matter of time!
.
So yeah, start wearing purple wearing purple!
Start wearing purple for me now!
So why don’t you start wearing purple?
Why don’t you start wearing purple
Start wearing purple for me now!
.
All your sanity and wits, they will all vanish,
I promise, it’s just a matter of time!
.
So Fio-Fio-Fioletta! Etta! Va-va-va-vaja dama ti moja!
Eh podayte name karetu, votetu, I mi poedem k ebenjam!
So yeah, start wearing purple wearing purple!
Start wearing purple for me now!
All your sanity and wits, they will all vanish,
I promise, it’s just a matter of time!

“When I am an old woman I shall wear purple
With a red hat that doesn’t go, and doesn’t suit me,
And I shall spend my pension
    on brandy and summer gloves
    And satin sandals,
and say we’ve no money for butter”

“Warning” a poem by Jenny Joseph…a favorite of mine on growing old.
    Enjoyed the song.
