When she falls

When She Falls

She has that look.

Something in the eyes.

In the line of her nose.

The tilt of her chin.

The set of her jaw.

She is bright, brave and assured.

But when she falls,

she will fall.

She has that smile.

Something in the curve.

In the line of her mouth,

The shape of her lips.

The show of her teeth.

She is cool, collected and poised.

But when she falls,

she will fall.

She has that way.

Something in the words.

In the sweep of her thoughts.

The pride in her voice,

The ice in her veins,

She is proud, aloof and secure.

But when she falls,

she will fall.

Oh, she will fall.

…then what? Is it her pride that brings her down to where she becomes humbly submissive or walks away? I can’t imagine walking away.

“I’m going to go ahead and go boldly,
because a little bird told me,
    that jumping is easy,
    and the falling is fun,
right up until you hit sidewalk,
shivering and stunned.” — Ani Difranco

And so she scans herself for broken bones
And for fleshy parts she can still feel
    To find everything whole except
    The rattling shattered porcelain
    And this accompanying numbness
    That now occupies
    The once warm space
    That was the center of
    Her chest — me

I’ve known those women…those that fall. I’m more of a dive in kind of women…equally dangerous in its own way.
